A special note to homeowners still recovering from Hurricane Irma and the 2017 hurricane season…
The effects of Hurricane Irma on the state of Florida and those directly hit by the storm will unfortunately be felt for years to come. For many of us who live here, it feels like it doesn’t really get the attention it deserves outside of our communities. Nonetheless, when it’s in your own community, you deal with it regardless. The sad reality is that too often, communities are ill-prepared to deal with major events like hurricanes, floods and everything else that comes with powerful storms. When a disaster strikes, essential repairs get tied up in a backlog of insurance claims and a lack of resources (materials and workforce) to handle such a widespread disaster. On a local level, it’s amazing how much damage a storm can cause in such a short period of time. In actual dollars, Irma’s damage to Florida alone amounts to an estimated $50 to $100 billion by some accounts. It’s hard to fathom how much property damage is wrapped up in $50 billion+, but easier to realize that it takes more than a local community alone to solve these problems.
To complicate things further, the initial damage is only a small portion of the actual damage that often occurs by the time a storm damaged home has been repaired. Hidden damages to homes and delays inspections or repairs often result in unnecessary losses, rotting infrastructure, mold and other issues. That’s why it is very important for home owners to get their homes inspected by a professional as soon as possible after a storm.
